Cruze is getting a new turbo and a new water pump.
I took it back to the shop yesterday because, after having the cam cover/PCV replaced last week, the CEL came back on over the weekend. I hooked up my code reader and it was the “Turbo Underboost” code again, so I made an appointment for yesterday and took it back. I also mentioned it leaks coolant and I have to top it off every 4-6 weeks. I got a call yesterday evening that they had found both issues, the leak was due to a bad water pump seal and they went ahead and replaced it and the pump. They don’t have the parts for the turbo, though, so it could be another couple of days but they will fix that and both should be covered under warranty.

That sucks! When I had my Cruze my water pump cracked and needed to be replaced.

Did they let you use a loaner?

Wow, that doesn’t sound good. I think mine is just leaking around the gaskets. I need to add maybe about 12 ounces of coolant every 4-6 weeks, so it’s not awful, though also not good.
But it is funny, I’ve had the car for 4 years and 94k miles, and all of the sudden both the PCV and turbo went out. But now it’s like I have a new Cruze, and if I could get another 4 years and 94k miles out of it, I’d be pretty happy.

Mine had its water pump replaced as part of the CPO.

My dealer doesn’t have their own fleet of service loaners, instead there’s an Enterprise up the road and they send you up there. The way it works is you go rent the car, and if it’s warranty work that’s covered, they call Enterprise and take over the charges.
This time I got a 2015 Cruze, so it’s virtually the same as mine, but with the ugly face lift. And it’s an automatic, which I’m finding isn’t as terrible as I thought it would be.

Nice. I’ve heard there’s TSBs out for the turbo, water pump, and the PCV. They are all known problems, especially on the MY 11-12 cars.

Well that’s almost convenient.

Yeah. I mean, it’s not awful, certainly better than just not having anything for you to drive. But it would be a lot nicer if they could just hand you keys and say “Here, take a loaner”

And the car you got is the newer version of yours which is nice but it is uglier and doesn’t have the transmission you prefer. So close guys ... so close.
Although I think you’d be hard pressed to find a loaner anywhere in the states with a manual.

Yeah. To be honest traffic has been murder here the last couple days - schools back so everyone is all messed up, so I’ve actually been okay with the slushbox, it’s been a nice break. And the fact that I appreciate that makes me feel like an old man.
Also, part of the fun for me of getting a rental is getting something new to drive. Last week I got a Dart and I actually liked it quite a bit. I still think it’s lacking as a total package compared to it’s contemporaries, but it’s a Dodge and did what Dodges do - it had a 2.4L (probably the biggest compact car engine you can get anymore) and a not awful 6 speed auto. I wouldn’t have minded getting another one this time around and having a few more days with it.

I test drove a manual Forester before I bought Forest and I found it annoying to have to shift. I don’t think I’d like to have to do that all day everyday. But I really enjoyed rowing my own in the Cobalt.

Yeah, got extended warranties on the TSBs that were dealt with. Still wary.

I think the Cobalt had one of the best stock shifters I’ve ever driven. Period.
I haven’t driven a Forester yet, but I recall the shifter in my WRX was rather blah. I put a Kartboy short throw in it and some stiffer bushings and it became much better. That said, if you’re going to daily it and you’re in a lot of traffic, getting an auto makes a lot more sense.

Yeah the Cobalt has the nicest stock shifter I’ve ever driven.
My issue with the Forester was mostly pedal related. There’s not a lot of room and I test drove it with sandals on. I couldn’t imagine wearing winter boots.

Hmm, hadn’t thought about that but it’s definitely something to be conscious of if/when I start looking at Foresters.
